Woman¡¯s body goes through many changes during the pregnancy to accommodate for the growing baby. Some of the changes are obviously seen, such as tummy getting bigger everyday; however, some of the changes may not be seen with our naked eyes such as hormonal changes and biomechanical changes. As the pregnant woman¡¯s abdomen protrudes out it accentuate the curves on the lower back and the body¡¯s center of her gravity also shifts forward. The pelvis also changes during the pregnancy due to the center of the gravity changes and hormonal changes which loosens the joints and ligaments. These changes are exciting; yet, unfortunately they come with many discomforts as well. Many women complain low back pain or mid back pain during and after pregnancy due to these changes in their spine; however, often time they cannot find pharmaceutical products to help them for concerns that it may harm the baby and complicate the pregnancy.
Chiropractic is a natural way to relieve back, neck or joint pain during pregnancy as well as giving you the benefit of maintaining a healthier pregnancy, controlling symptoms of nausea, reducing the time of labor and delivery, and preventing a potential cesarean section.
The International Chiropractic Pediatric Association recommends that women receive chiropractic care throughout pregnancy to establish pelvic balance and optimize the room a baby has for development throughout pregnancy. With a balanced pelvis, babies have a better chance of moving into the ideal position for birth, and the crisis and worry associated with breech and posterior presentations may be minimized altogether. Optimal baby positioning at the time of birth also eliminates the potential for difficult labor and promotes safer deliveries for both the mother and baby.
In 2002 the July/August issue of The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics reports an 82% success rate of babies turning vertex when doctors of chiropractic used the Webster Technique. Furthermore, the results from the study suggest that it may be beneficial to perform the Webster Technique as soon as the 8th month of pregnancy when a woman has a breech presentation. Dr. Chun uses accommodating table for pregnant woman and uses minimal pressure to avoid unwanted pressure on abdomen during adjustment.
